The naval stores industry collects, processes, and markets forest products refined from the oleoresin of the slash pine and longleaf pine trees (genus Pinus). The industry was associated with the maintenance of the wooden ships and sailing tackle of preth century navies, which were caulked and waterproofed using the pitch (or resin, also known as tar) of the pine tree. The turpentine and rosin are known as gum turpentine and gum rosin, respectively. This differentiates them from turpentine and rosin which are recovered as by-products from chemical pulping of pines and which are termed as sulfate naval stores and wood naval stores. These are similar materials obtained from aged pine stumps.

Mission Statement. The Midshipmen Store is a non-appropriated fund retail activity to service the needs of the Brigade of Midshipmen. This retail activity carries a wide range of items required by the Midshipmen in the performance of their duties, and also a complete line of U.S. Naval Academy and Navy emblematic clothing items and gifts at unbeatable prices. Bibliography of Wood Distillation INTRODUCTION This bibliography is a revision and extension to of Bibli-ography of Wood Distillation, published in The term wood distillation is used rather loosely in the litera-ture, consequently, references may include carbonization, steam dis-.

Thus, taking average yields of well-operated plants and valuing the products at current wholesale prices, a cord of wood may be said to yield the following approximate gross values: Hard wood, destructively distilled $ 00 Pine (good light wood) 00 Pine (good, steam-distilled) 7. 00 Pine extracted with soda, soda pulp made 00 Pine. and The gum naval stores industry, at its. distilled. The joint products of the distillation are gum turpentine and rosin. The gum naval stores operation is defined as an agricultural pursuit and until the early 's was practically the only source of naval stores.

The Southeast Coastal Area of the United Stat~s has long been a major center of world production of naval stores.

Distillation of wood is the process in which wood is heated (not burned) to form charcoal and vapors. The vapors condense in a cold collecting test tube to form a brownish liquid. This liquid is called pyroligneous acid. It is composed of a complex mixture of acetic acid, methyl alcohol, acetone and a number of other Size: KB.

Except for the period between andthe naval stores industry has had a steady growth, so far as the value of its products is concerned. The market prices are subject to great variation,* not only according to supply and demand, but also through manipulation on the exchange.

Products/Services for Wood Distillation Equipment Distillation Equipment and Solvent Recovery Systems - ( companies) Distillation is the processing of a liquid mixture to separate the components by alternating evaporation and condensation. Scope and Content Note This collection is comprised of materials from different sources.

The bulk of the collection came from the files of various branches and divisions within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) dealing with naval stores and naval stores price support loans, including the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC); Naval Stores Division of the Tobacco Branch of the Production.

Destructive distillation is a chemical process in which decomposition of unprocessed material is achieved by heating it to a high temperature; the term generally applies to processing of organic material in the absence of air or in the presence of limited amounts of oxygen or other reagents, catalysts, or solvents, such as steam or is an application of pyrolysis.

First there was the competition from wood naval stores, petroleum based products, and sulfate naval stores, specifically sulfate rosin, or "tall oil", production. Labor and production costs, which continued to increase while demand did not, also played a significant role.

This book was written by a science graduate with many years experience adapting commercial distillation processes to small-scale, inexpensive home operations. It details all the steps involved in making whiskey, from making corn mash, to fermentation, to distilling the finished spirit.Wood naval stores are derived from the resinous wood of old stumps either through destructive distillation ('tar burning') or through the extraction of pine resin from finely chipped stumpwood with steam or organic solvents.

Sulphate naval stores obtained as a by-product of chemical pulping (kraft) of pine wood. Sulphate turpentine is condensed.
